Subacute thyroiditis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective: It was aimed to evaluate the etiological relationship between SARS-CoV-2 virus and subacute thyroiditis (SAT). We also wanted point out fact that these two entities may have similar clinical features. Materials Methods: During 4th month of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic in our country; five patients were referred clinic for neck ultrasonography (USG) with a suspected diagnosis SAT based on laboratory Past medical history, contact COVID-19 Polyerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test results cases evaluated. Results: Subfebrile fever, sore throat, burning sensation difficulty swallowing presenting symptoms patients. All had abnormal thyroid hormone values elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate/C-Reactive Protein (CRP) values. USG showed increased gland volume four Hypovascularized heterogeneous hypoechoic patchy areas parenchyma observed all without discrete nodules. Ultrasound elastography revealed parenchymal heterogeneity stiffness. Low-dose non-contrast chest computerized tomography (CT) findings normal negative Polymerase chain reaction Conclusion: Subacute thyroiditis, which is often accused by viral agents etiology, be associated SARS-CoV-2. The similarity infection pose diagnostic challenges.
